Sword & Shield is Alive (Market Movers)

Sword & Shield sealed is climbing while Scarlet & Violet hype cools.

By Chase Society Desk

Sword & Shield Is Creeping Back Up

As you probably know, for months most of the attention in Pokemon has gone toward one place:

Mega Evolution and Scarlet & Violet.

New releases. Fresh hype.

And we’ve constantly seen collectors chasing the newest shiny thing over and over again. We saw it once again with Chaos Rising this past weekend, which just as we predicted, saw prices decline as quickly as they exploded pre-release.

But in the background, something interesting has been emerging:

Sword & Shield sealed has started creeping back up again.

Slowly but surely.

And honestly, these moves are definitely worth paying attention to.

Sword & Shield: The Comeback

This is where things get interesting.

Lost Origin led the charge, ripping 27% to $210 from its price last week of $165.

Which makes perfect sense when we break down what’s going on.

The set has one of the most appealing modern chase cards in the hobby with Giratina V Alternate Art, the highly sought after Aerodactyl V Alternate Art, recognizable artwork across the board, and a fanbase that seems to appreciate the set more as time goes on and nostalgia slowly kicks in.

And once supply starts drying up, prices usually don’t need massive demand to move higher.

Something we find particularly interesting on our side is the fact that Lost Origin was the very first set where Booster Bundles were introduced.

Could that potentially carry a premium down the line? Collectors love the first edition of anything and Lost Origin can be considered the “First Edition” of a sealed product that has taken over modern Pokemon collecting.

Then there’s Silver Tempest.

For a while, it honestly felt like one of the forgotten Sword & Shield sets.

But the market may slowly be changing its mind.

We actually saw a pretty big jump from $500 to $600, while the Elite Trainer Box (ETB) also climbed higher at the same time.

Consistent and simultaneous appreciation across the baseline products of a set usually tells us something clear and worth paying attention to:

Demand is broadening across the product line.

Having Lugia V Alternate Art as the chase card definitely helps with fans worldwide!

The Read

Here is the takeaway:

Sword & Shield feels like it’s entering a new phase.

Unlike Scarlet & Violet and Mega Evolution, Sword & Shield is no longer in active print.

No more waves of fresh supply.

No more restocks.

Every time sealed gets ripped, stored away, or added to personal collections, available supply gets smaller.

We call that the deflationary effect.

And it matters.

We don’t just see this in the numbers either but IRL.

This past weekend, we had boots on the ground at Collect-A-Con and saw collector after collector looking for Sword & Shield products. Maybe it’s the deflationary effect, maybe it’s hype cooling off for the most recent sets as we see prices starting to level out which causes investors to look elsewhere.

It definitely does feel like the market has calmed down a little and some of the euphoria is exiting. Do we think this is the end of the market? Of course, not.

As markets go (and this is a financial market as crazy as it sounds), we’re seeing signs of stabilization, with certain products and sets slowly climbing higher through accumulation but not so fast as to call it mania. This is a healthy signal.

And it’s something worth paying attention to, especially when we talk about products that are out of print and slowly entering nostalgia phases.

Some of today’s “forgotten” Sword & Shield products may not stay forgotten for much longer as the data and our boots on the ground indicate.
