Here is everything you need to know before the new cards land.

A Long Time Coming

Recent Pokemon sets have been flying off the shelves faster than can be printed, and the Chaos Rising set dropping tomorrow won’t be the exception. Finally, the fan favorite Greninja gets its Mega Evolution that collectors have waited eagerly for years now.

Greninja sits near the top of every popularity poll the franchise has ever run and the card game never gave it a real chase card to service those fans. That changes tomorrow.

About the Set

Chaos Rising is inspired by the game Pokemon Legends: Z-A, where Lumiose City is under siege and Mega Floette has gone full chaos mode, wreaking havoc on the people of the Kalos region. In the middle of it all? Mega Greninja, stepping up as the hero to reign in the anarchy.

What’s inside the packs:

  • Total Count: 122 cards (slightly smaller than recent sets)
  • Mega Evolution ex: 5 total, including
  • New Mechanic: Ancient Trait provides passive buffs to Mega Evolution ex cards, enhancing their strategic depth
  • Special Illustration Rares (SIR): 6 full-bleed, hand-painted cards
    • Most sought-after: Mega Greninja ex SIR and Mega Floette ex SIR
  • Other Rarities:
    • 5 Pokemon ex
    • 11 Illustration Rare Pokemon
    • 18 Ultra Rare Pokemon & Trainer cards
  • Pull Rates (not exact, but the best estimate we could find so far):
    • SIR: 1 in ~86 packs
    • Mega Hyper Rare (Gold): 1 in ~144 packs
    • Mega Greninja ex SIR: as rare as 1 in ~620 packs

So now the real question: what are the most desired Chase Cards?

Without any question, the two biggest chase cards in Chaos Rising are Mega Greninja ex cards, both the Mega Hyper Rare Gold version and the Special Illustration Rare. According to our data, these are already fetching multi-hundred dollar price tags in their raw form from prerelease packs some lucky people get access to.

The strength these cards bring to the set and the hunt collectors will need to go on to obtain them should set the baseline for the output of the overall set. We’ll keep an eye on the performance of these two cards in particular as a proxy for how Chaos Rising stacks up to the already compelling roster the Pokemon TCG has been putting out.

Whether you’re chasing the stunning Special Illustration Rare, the ultra-premium Gold Hyper Rare, or another sleeper hit from the set, one thing is clear: Chaos Rising looks loaded.
